چکیده

In this study, Jatropha curcas oil was used as feedstock for biodiesel production by alkali-catalyzed methanolysis. To establish the optimum conditions for biodiesel production, effects of certain factors were investigated, these factors are oil-to-methanol molar ratios (1:4 1:8), KOH catalyst concentrations (0.5 1.5% w/w oil), reaction temperatures (50 70oC), and reaction times (55 90minutes). Biodiesel produced were analyzed to determine its viscosity, flash point and pour point. The experimental work revealed that optimum conditions for Jatropha curcas biodiesel production were oil-to-methanol molar ratio of 1:6, a catalyst concentration of 1.0% w/w oil, a reaction temperature of 60 °C, and a reaction time of 80 minutes. The methyl ester produced under these optimum conditions was 93.75 % w/w.

Dynamic Modeling of Reversible Methanolysis of Jatropha curcas Oil to Biodiesel

Many kinetics studies on methanolysis assumed the reactions to be irreversible. The aim of the present work was to study the dynamic modeling of reversible methanolysis of Jatropha curcas oil (JCO) to biodiesel. The experimental data were collected under the optimal reaction conditions: molar ratio of methanol to JCO at 6 : 1, reaction temperature of 60°C, 60 min of reaction time, and 1% w/w of...

Ultrasound-Assisted Biodiesel Production in microreactors

The ultrasound-assisted (UA) soybean oil methanolysis using KOH as a catalyst was studied at different reaction conditions in a microreactor. Box–Behnken experimental design, with three variables, was performed and the effects of three reaction variables i.e. reaction temperature, catalyst concentration and the methanol-to-oil molar ratio on fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) yield were evaluated b...

Two-Stage Conversion of High Free Fatty Acid Jatropha curcas Oil to Biodiesel Using Brønsted Acidic Ionic Liquid and KOH as Catalysts

Biodiesel was produced from high free fatty acid (FFA) Jatropha curcas oil (JCO) by two-stage process in which esterification was performed by Brønsted acidic ionic liquid 1-(1-butylsulfonic)-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BSMIM]Cl) followed by KOH catalyzed transesterification. Maximum FFA conversion of 93.9% was achieved and it reduced from 8.15 wt% to 0.49 wt% under the optimum reaction cond...

Direct production of biodiesel from high-acid value Jatropha oil with solid acid catalyst derived from lignin

BACKGROUND Solid acid catalyst was prepared from Kraft lignin by chemical activation with phosphoric acid, pyrolysis and sulfuric acid. This catalyst had high acid density as characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDX) and Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) method analyses. It was further used to catalyze the esterification of oleic acid and o...

Production of biodiesel from non-edible Jatropha curcas oil via transesterification using Bi2O3-La2O3 catalyst ABSTRACT The simultaneous esterification and transesterification of Jatropha curcas

The simultaneous esterification and transesterification of Jatropha curcas oil (JCO) was carried out in the presence of Bi2O3 (1–7 wt.%) modified La2O3 catalyst at atmospheric pressure. The catalyst were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET surface area, desorption of CO2 (TPD-CO2) and NH3 (TPD-NH3). Under the optimal reaction condition of methanol/oil molar ratio of 15:1, 2 wt.% of ca...
